Kabul is a much less developed city than Kandahar or Herat, as Afghan's capital city. Kabul is located at a central location of the country, on the banks of the Kabul River, at an approximate latitude of 34°02&arcmin;46&arcsec;31°30&arcmin;49&arcsec;–06°49–07°00 N and longitude of 71°58&arcmin;43&arcsec;33°39&arcmin;–07°03–06°23–58°50–18°50–18°10–07°00 W. The city's population density is estimated at over 200,000 per km2.
The Karakorum Highway runs in a north-south direction from Pakistan through Afghanistan. It then proceeds west through central, and northern China, and finally terminates in Mongolia. The road is within a few kilometers from the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. With no road or rail connections to urban Afghanistan, cargo is transported from Pakistan via truck or container ship to the Afghan port of Kandahar which in turn is connected by rail to its major Afghan cities including Herat, Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif and Kandahar. The Afghan port of Chaman is also used as a ferry port for Pakistan and India, but there is no rail and road connection between it and urban Afghanistan. Kandahar, Herat and Kabul are the most important cities in Afghanistan and are the only cities not located in the mountainous countryside or adjacent to a border with Pakistan. With the absence of these cities, it is estimated that around 90 % of the country's population live in the rural areas. The only major city without a border with Pakistan is Mazar-e-Sharif. d2c66b5586
