We will start with the basics of media literacy, as this is the building block for free expression, and how the media industry is organised. Then we move on to a brief history of the media and the debate about free expression. We’ll also look at the justification for the suppression of the free expression of voice, and the threat to free expression posed by the prevalence of ‘Fake News’. Finally, we will provide a range of recommendations to enable citizens to resist the suppression of their voices. This includes: access to quality media, being aware of how the media industry functions, avoiding fake news, engaging with the media, monitoring the media, and using social media.
The right to free expression, and indeed democracy itself, depend upon the ability of the ‘voices’ to speak out and be heard through the media. However, many voices are broadcast in ways that seek to suppress their message by imposing a view onto the public that is antithetical to the right to free expression. One of the most pernicious ‘voices’ is that of ‘Fake News’. Indeed, ‘Fake News’ is a commodity that enjoys a thriving market in the digital era.As a consequence, people around the world are being misled by biased ‘voices’ that seek to suppress the messages of others and, in fact, are themselves often ‘Fake News’.This is not just about domestic censorship. The suppression of the free expression of voice is also occurring internationally. History will judge harshly any nation that shuts down the free flow of information between its people. We are witnessing the censorship of ideas, and the silencing of voices that seek to advance human rights, peace and justice. This book explores how this censorship is taking place, how it is justified, and how it is being resisted.
