If we are going to have a focus on the academic skills needed for a successful school experience, we must recognize the many roles that schools can play in this process. Schools can be a microcosm of society and therefore students come to school with beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that are shaped by their experiences and their perceptions of their place in society. Schools can be a setting in which students can learn to take ownership of their own learning, can learn to make their own connections between the knowledge they learn in school and the knowledge they need in their lives, can learn critical thinking skills, and can learn to work together in a collaborative manner with each other and with the adults who work with them. All of these skills are important for all students to have, but they are especially important for students who have experienced adversity in their lives. Students who have experienced adversity are at risk for not learning these skills in school because they may not have had a chance to learn them in other settings.
Applying the framework to the school setting, the National Core, which is developed by the National Standards Project, provides a four-year sequence of skills in order to be successful in the school setting. The first year is focused on mastering Common Core Curriculum Standards. The second year is focused on mastering grade-level standards. The third year is focused on mastering of state standards. The fourth year is focused on mastery of college-level courses and academic credit. To keep the sequence simple, we will focus on the first three years because that is what the framework of the Interagency Working Group on Evaluation of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of the Director (2013), is based on. The National Core provides us with a foundation for thinking about the skills that are needed for educational attainment and employment and how to build on these skills to increase the likelihood of succeeding in the school setting.
What is needed in every setting from the home, to the community, to the school to the college level in order to achieve educational attainment is a focus on the development of academic skills, the skills needed to succeed in postsecondary education, and the skills needed to function well in the work force. The framework developed by the Interagency Working Group on Evaluation of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of the Director (2013), gives us a good base for understanding the sequence of skills and academic knowledge that lead to higher educational attainment and employment.
